The Literacy Pirates works with children who are falling behind at school and have fewer opportunities in their lives. Our after-school, year-long Learning Programme improves their reading, writing, confidence and perseverance so they can achieve at school and beyond.
What we do and How we do it
We work with children aged 9-12 whose teachers think they would benefit from some extra support. The Young Pirates come to our learning centre, Ship, after school for 2.5 hours.
The Ship is a weird and wonderful out-of-school pirate-themed learning environment complete with secret passageways, an underwater cave and a ship’s cat.
The Learning Programme is devised and led by teachers. Children receive some help on their reading through with an adult in 121 or small groups. This cheer-leader type support in reading and writing is offered by our family of volunteers, Crewmates. Anyone can volunteer and we train and support our Crewmates throughout their time with us.
Each term they work on a unique creative publishing project, working with professionals to write their own books, film script and website app. The Young Pirate’s work is published and then celebrated in a book launch, film premiere and App Launch.
