Become a Volunteer Crewmate

We welcome volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. No previous experience is necessary, just enthusiasm and an interest in supporting local children.


What Do Volunteer Crewmates Do?

  • Reading with individual children or in small groups.

  • Supporting children to complete writing projects that contribute to books, studio recordings and films.

  • Encouraging young people to feel confident and persevere with their work.

  • Joining in with games and group activities.

  • Supporting new volunteers in their first session.

What's the time commitment?

  • We ask Volunteer Crewmates to commit to completing at least 12 sessions in total at a rate of at least one session per month.

  • Our sessions run from 3.45pm - 6.45pm every weekday during the school term.

  • We also have holiday workshops (usually 1.45-4.45pm during certain weeks of the school holidays).

What’s it like to be a Volunteer Crewmate?

What are the minimum requirements of a volunteer?

  • Able to independently support Young Pirates in their learning

  • A patient and respectful approach to children and adults

  • Functional English skills

  • Good communication skills. The ability to follow, retain and then relay instructions

  • Reliable and punctual

  • Self-reflective, seeking ways to improve individual practise

  • Able to implement our learning strategies and behaviour management techniques

How do I sign up?

  • To become a volunteer you will need to fill out a short application form by clicking on "Volunteer" at the top or bottom of this page.

  • You will then be given the option to sign up for a 3 hour Training session.

  • You will be asked to complete a DBS check as part of the recruitment process in accordance with our child protection policy.
